48 while he did go to Korea, he only served there for 11 months, came back to the US in 1951 to serve as head of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and then in late 1952 was made head of the Third Naval District headquartered in New York which was a position he served until 1953. So he was not in Korea in other words or at a far location. He was stationed in New York and certainly would have made visits to the Pentagon, to Washington, etc. without any problem.
